Personal Storytelling at #HotDocsPodFest

Media Girlfriends opened the Hot Docs Podcast Festival in February 2021 with a workshop on personal storytelling. Tori Allen, Garvia Bailey, Nana aba Duncan and Hannah Sung discussed the highs and lows of producing personal stories for podcasts. At a time when there seems to be a growing appetite for personal stories in podcasts, is there such a thing as going too far? How can we responsibly handle stories of lived experience when it comes to race, class, abilities and more?

Your Story, Your Brand: A Workshop for Creatives

Your Story Your Brand is a workshop that combines media literacy and self-exploration with the art of storytelling. It doesn’t matter what medium you work in, be it visual arts, music, sound design, or fashion, your ability to connect with a potential audience can hinge on your ability to pull people closer with a story—your story.

The goal is to find comfort and confidence in telling your story in a compelling way in order to garner interest from journalists, funders, clients and potential stakeholders.

Storytelling with Care

In podcasting, there is a growing appetite for personal stories. How can we ensure we’re interviewing people and handling their stories with the care they deserve? How do improved, trauma-informed interviewing techniques lead to better storytelling?

In this session we discuss what we’ve learned, and need to unlearn, to continue to become better interviewers.
