Personal Storytelling at #HotDocsPodFest

Media Girlfriends opened the Hot Docs Podcast Festival in February 2021 with a workshop on personal storytelling. Tori Allen, Garvia Bailey, Nana aba Duncan and Hannah Sung discussed the highs and lows of producing personal stories for podcasts. At a time when there seems to be a growing appetite for personal stories in podcasts, is there such a thing as going too far? How can we responsibly handle stories of lived experience when it comes to race, class, abilities and more?

Black Women In Journalism

On Wednesday, March 10, 2021, Media Girlfriends presented an International Women’s Week event in collaboration with Consent Comes First, the Office of Sexual Violence Support and Education at Ryerson, Ryerson Library, and Ryerson’s School of Journalism. Black women in journalism shared their experiences in the field, the changes that the profession needs to implement and ways they are building community together. With Dr. Rita Shelton Deverell, Eternity Martis, Kathleen Newman-Bremang and Vicky Mochama. Moderated by Media Girlfriends founder, Nana aba Duncan.
